Giant body rigs like these were used to make the hobbits appear smaller. Weta Workshop created dozens of oversized costumes, extended leg rigs, and massive remote-controlled hands to maintain the illusion of scale. These rigs were used in crowded scenes, like in The Prancing Pony and On the Streets of Bree. This is what I do. This is the big rig.
